Great Lakes Loop Roadtrip: Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan – Day 3 – Milwaukee, WI’s Lakefront & Historic Third Ward

Day 3 brought us north into Milwaukee, and it didn’t take long for us to realize this was our kind of city. The pace felt relaxed, the people were welcoming, and there was a balance of creativity and comfort that just clicked. Milwaukee reminded me a lot of Cleveland, which instantly made it feel like home. It was vibrant without being overwhelming, artistic without being pretentious, and friendly in a way that made me want to stay.

Blüm Coffee Garden: Stained Glass, Plants & the Perfect Morning Brew

I had seen this spot pop up on a TikTok video and knew we had to check it out. Let me just say, it was 1000% worth it. Part greenhouse and part coffee shop, Blüm is a dreamy mix of skylights, lush greenery, and colorful stained glass. It felt more like stepping into a botanical sanctuary than a café, and the coffee was just as good as the atmosphere.

Blüm Coffee Garden is a unique café set inside the historic stained glass dome of the former South Division High School, built in the 1920s. The dome itself is the centerpiece, glowing with light and color that shifts as the day moves on. Combined with lush greenery and a wall waterfall, the setting feels like art and nature working together. Between the rich, smooth coffee and the brilliance of that dome overhead, this stop was unforgettable.

Basilica of St. Josaphat: Awe and Emotion

From there, we stepped into one of the most awe-inspiring spaces I have ever been in. The Basilica of St. Josaphat rises up in towering beauty, and once inside, it’s impossible not to feel something shift. The domed ceilings, intricate murals, and sheer scale of the place took my breath away. I lit a candle for my mom and found myself suddenly overwhelmed with emotion, the kind you can’t really put into words.

It was a grounding and humbling moment that I’ll carry with me. On the way out, we stopped by the gift shop, and I couldn’t resist a “Da Pope” t-shirt, a little wink at the fact that the new pope is from Chicago. Now it’s my go-to Sunday morning “church” hike shirt, a reminder that spirituality doesn’t reside in four walls, but rather wherever you are, and in my case that’s outdoors, among the trees, in nature, with my dogs, my family, or my friends.

Milwaukee Art Museum: A Modern Icon on the Lakefront

Next came the Milwaukee Art Museum, and if you’ve ever seen pictures of it, you know the building is iconic. Its white, wing-like design opens up over Lake Michigan like something futuristic. Just standing inside and watching the structure unfold against the water was worth the stop all on its own.

Inside, we explored the galleries and took in the exhibits. The collection leaned heavily into modern art, which isn’t really my thing, but it was still fun to see and experience. Sometimes it’s not about whether the art connects with you, but whether the space makes you think, and this museum did exactly that. Even if it didn’t steal my heart, I’m glad we went.

Historic Third Ward & Milwaukee Public Market: Food, Flavor & Afternoon Wandering

The Historic Third Ward quickly became one of our favorite areas in the city. The Milwaukee Public Market was buzzing with stalls of vendors selling meats, cheeses, fish, fruits, veggies, and every kind of specialty food you could imagine. Everything was beautifully displayed, and walking through felt like a celebration of local flavors. We grabbed more coffee, because of course we did, and spent time just wandering the aisles.

When we finished in the market, we headed out into the neighborhood itself. The Third Ward is full of brick buildings and converted warehouses, now home to boutiques, gift shops, and vintage finds. We popped in and out of stores, browsed quirky items, and loved the balance of old industrial character with fresh creativity. Before we knew it, hours had slipped by, and we realized we had happily spent the entire afternoon here, completely wrapped up in the charm of the neighborhood.

Travel Notes

  • Parking: Easy. Parking at all of our stops was quick and simple, with free options in many places.
  • Walkability: Excellent. Milwaukee’s highlights are clustered together along the lakefront and in the Third Ward, making it easy to explore on foot.
  • Highlights: The stained glass dome at Blüm Coffee Garden and the food and shops of the Historic Third Ward.
  • Would I go back? Absolutely. Milwaukee surprised me with how much it felt like home — approachable, creative, and full of heart.

Final Thoughts: A City That Felt Like Home

Was it slower than Chicago? Yes. Did it feel like the kind of city I could sink into for days? Also yes. Milwaukee had a way of balancing history, artistry, and warmth that left me both inspired and grounded.

Between morning coffee under a stained glass dome, the stillness of lighting a candle at the Basilica, a tour of modern art, and an afternoon lost in the charm of the Third Ward, Milwaukee gave us a perfect third day on the road. Tomorrow, we trade city vibes for natural ones as we head into Wisconsin’s state parks and rolling landscapes.
